The Simple Hat

The hat pattern is modified from a great pattern I found from Stash Lounge.

Skill level: Easy

What you need to know: Knit, Purl, Change colours

What you need:

  • 2 balls of wool each 4.5 oz (127 g) – (I used an Alpaca Wool I bought at a market in Italy for the grey (A) and Loops & Threads Cozy Wool for the pink (B).
  • 9 mm circular needles 16”
  • 9 mm double pointed needles
  • darning needle

Terms:

K – knit

P – purl

K2T – knit 2 together

Hat:

On your 9mm circular needles with Colour A cast on 42 stitches. Leave and a tail 8” (20 cm) place marker and be careful not to twist as you join.

Row 1: *K3 P3* repeat * * to end of round

Row 2-10: repeat Row 1

Row 11-12: Knit round

Switch to Colour B

Row 13 – 24 Knit

Switch to Colour A

Row 25 – 27 Knit

Row 28 – *K5, K2T* repeat * * to end of round

Row 29 – Knit round

Row 30 – *K4, K2T* repeat * * to end of round

Row 31 – Knit

Row 32 – *K3, K2T* repeat * * to end of round

– at this stage if it is getting too difficult, switch to double pointed needles –

Row 33 – Knit round

Row 34- *K2, K2T* repeat * * to end of round

Row 35 – Knit

Row 36- *K1, K2T* repeat * * to end of round

Cut your yarn, leaving about a 8” (20 cm) tail and thread onto darning needle. Put the needle through the stitches and pull tight. Turn hat inside out and use the yarn to sew up the top of the hat; weave in ends of colour changed yarn and cast on tail.

*Single colour version – uses 1 ball of yarn.

On your 9mm circular needles with Colour cast on 42 stitches. Leave and a tail 8” (20 cm) place marker and be careful not to twist as you join.

Row 1-10: *K3 P3* repeat * * to end of round

Row 11: Knit

Repeat for 16 more rows (17 knit rows in total)

Follow rows 28-36 above.

Pom Pom (optional):

Take yarns from Colour A and Colour B and wrap them around the palm your hand about 40 times. Tie in the middle very tightly with thread and then tie with yarn and double knot it. Cut loops on either end. Leave the ends long to use to sew into your hat.
