Mini Jamaican Beef Patties

What do I like about December? The holiday get-togethers and time spent with loved ones, friends and family. What do I hate about December? The weather! When the weather outside is frightful, or just cold, wet and crappy, my mind turns to sunny days and sunny places, like Jamaica! I have very fond memories of Jamaica and heading off with Pete for long weekends in February to get a blast of sun and to escape our cold, snowy winters! How can you not like Jamaica? Besides the sun and the beautiful beaches, there is the food! Jamaican Beef Patties! The slightly spicy beef patties are a dinner favourite of students, and still a favourite of mine!

Mini everything is great! I love mini things for cocktails parties or those dinners when you are eating lots of apps. These little minis are 2 – 3 bites of happiness and memories of days lounging in the sun. They are also perfect for holiday get-togethers. They pull together quickly – your prep time gets cut down by using a little won ton wrapper for the dough. A shout out to Epicurious for this recipe which was slightly tweaked, and my niece Claire for helping me make these!

Prep time: 30 minutes; Cook time: 15 minutes; Serves: Makes 28 – 30 mini patties

What you need:

  • 1/2 lb lean ground beef

  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 2 tbsp bread crumbs
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 package won ton wrappers
  • 1 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil + 2ish cups vegetable oil (for frying)

What you do:

  • In a frypan over medium-high heat, add 1 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil and saute green onion, onion, thyme, curry powder, salt and pepper about 5 minutes

  • Add ground beef and bread crumbs and stir, breaking up

  • Cook for about 3 minutes, until lightly cooked
  • Add hot sauce and cool slightly
  • Use a teaspoon, scoop filling, and place in the centre of a wrapper.

  • Lightly brush the edge of the wrapper with water, then fold in half (diagonally if square) and press to seal.

  • Form mini patties

  • Heat 1 inch of oil to 350°F in a 12-inch skillet.
  • Fry mini patties in batches, turning once or twice, until golden-brown, 2 to 3 minutes per batch.

  • Place on a paper towel and lightly sprinkle salt on top

  • Serve

  • I used Jerk Steak Sauce as a dipping sauce

  • I can almost feel the sunshine on my face right now!

  • Perfect for holiday cocktail parties and get-togethers with family and friends!

  • Enjoy!

    • I would try brushing them with olive oil, placing them on a aluminum foil lined baking sheet (also brush with oil) and bake at 400f – try 25 minutes and check if they are cooked and crispy. Report back with results please!

  • They look like samosas. They do look nice but they are not Jamaican patties. Our patties are bright yellow with a flakey dough texture. We also bake the patties. Maybe it’s just inspired by the seasoning.

    • You are correct! They do not have that beautiful flaky dough! The won ton wrappers just speed up the process.
The filling is inspired by the Jamaican beef patty. If you have a recipe for the flaky yellow dough, please share.
