Maple Cocktails

Fast, what foods jump to mind when you think of Canadian cuisine? If maple syrup is not at the top of your list, it is certainly in the top three! I can’t think of any food that is more Canadian than maple syrup (sorry, Vermont!). Maybe it’s because we have a big old maple leaf smack dab in the middle of our flag. Maybe it’s because the red maple is the tree you can’t help but notice in the fall. Maybe it’s because Canada’s favourite hockey team is the Maple Leafs.
This upcoming weekend is a long weekend in Canada! Yay! It’s Canadian Thanksgiving. Since Thanksgiving is a time when family and friends gather, it’s also the perfect time to share a cocktail.
Just in time for Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend, I’ve collected a few maple syrup-based cocktails. To make this a little more international, I’ve reached out to some of my Instagram friends for some of their favourite maple syrup-based cocktails.
American friends, you can Pin this post for cocktail suggestions at the end of November!
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
To start, Jay and Leah write Gastronomblog.com and were kind enough to send me this drink recipe, which I have to say, is right up my alley! If you are like me and love ginger, you will be all over The Maple and Cider Kentucky Mule by Gastronom. This Bourbon-based riff on a Moscow Mule looks perfect for the fall! Check them out for great photos and cocktail development.

Next up, a Brazilian home bartender and mixology fan, Michel, whips up some beautiful and very fun cocktails over at his extremely popular Mix_o_logic Instagram page. While we’re making this for Thanksgiving, I think you can also make another batch of these beautiful Strawberry Rickeys for Halloween, especially with that great garnish!!!
Strawberry RickeyWhat you need:
Combine first three ingredients in a shaker filled with ice
Shake to combine
Strain into glass and top with tonic water
Garnish with the chocolate spider and strawberry
We now present a beautiful Old-Fashioned cocktail. The Old Fashioned is making quite a comeback, although some will say it never left! The addition of maple, and my choice of Black Cloud Charred Cedar bitters, give it a sweet and smokey update.
Maple Bourbon Old-Fashioned
What you need:
2 oz bourbon (I used Bulleit Bourbon)
2 tsp maple syrup
1 tsp water
1 dash bitters (I used Black Cloud Bitter Charred Cedar)
1 orange peel
1 maraschino cherry
What you do:
Combine maple syrup, water and bitters in a glass, stirring until well-blended
Add a few blocks of ice and the orange peel
Pour bourbon on top
Garnish with a cherry and serve
The next cocktail combines citrus, fresh herbs and maple syrup and is brought to us by the fabulous Sea Fire Grill in NYC.
Thyme Will Tell (From the Sea Fire Grill in New York City)
What you need:
2 oz bourbon (I used Basil Hayden)
1/2 oz maple syrup
1/2 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
thyme
What you do:
Muddle thyme in the bottom of a rocks glass
Add the bourbon, maple syrup and lemon juice
Stir to combine
Add ice
Garnish with a lemon peel
This next cocktail may look a touch familiar – it made guest appearances in both “No Labour Day Cocktails” and “Thank You Coffee“. This cocktail is gluten-free and features just three ingredients! You also get a good arm workout when you are shake, shake, shaking it up to give you that lovely #foamporn.
The Black Espresso Martini
2 oz Black Cow Vodka (it is gluten-free, and besides, I take my coffee black)
1 oz cold espresso
10 ml (2 tsp) maple syrup
coffee beans (optional garnish)
What you do:
Fill a shaker with ice
Add the Black Cow Vodka, espresso and maple syrup
Shake, shake, shake!
Take a break and then shake, shake, shake some more!
Strain into a coupe glass (the gorgeous “crema” you get on the top is amazing)
Garnish with coffee beans
Perfect for after a long day of driving or after dinner
