Cold Brew Coffee

Raise your hand if you are a fan of Cold Brew Coffee! This may be the “hottest” coffee trend. Instead of being brewed with hot water, this is steeped overnight in your fridge. People swear that it is smoother and sweeter since the cold time-based process leaches out the bitterness in the coffee. Since there is less acid, it’s thought to be better for your stomach and for your teeth!

An additional upside is that you’ll save yourself $3 or more every morning. The downside is that you’ll need between 12 – 24 hours of chilling time to make it (the store with the mermaid logo is said to cold brew their coffee for 20 hours). The best part? You can make it on the weekend for the upcoming week. Enjoy some Cold Brew Coffee while the weather is still warm.

Since October 1 is National Coffee Day, I thought I’d let you work on your Cold Brew Coffee game! Want to read more about the history of coffee? Check out Meet Me For a Coffee! Want something a little stronger? Check out some Coffee Cocktails here!

Prep time: 5 minutes; Chill time: 12 – 24 hours; Serves: Makes between 2 – 2 1/2 cups Cold Brew Coffee concentrate (enough for 4 – 5 Cold Brew Coffees)

What you need (for the Cold Brew Concentrate):

  • 1 1/2 cup ground coffee (you can use fresh ground beans or store-bought)
  • 3 cups water (for steeping)

To drink:

  • 1/2 cup water per 1/2 cup Cold Brew Coffee concentrate
  • milk, sugar (optional)

What you do:

  • In a large container or 1 L mason jar, add the ground coffee
  • Slowly pour in the water, stirring

  • Stir to mix, seal, place in fridge 12 – 24 hours
  • After 12 – 24 hours, strain using a strainer, coffee filter (preferably a basket filter) or paper towel. (I used a strainer and coffee filter the first time and a paper towel the second time. I liked the paper towel better than the cone filter I used)

  • Strain a second time to remove any residual grinds

  • Fill a large glass with ice, add 1/2 cup coffee concentrate and 1/2 cup cold water, stir

  • Add milk and sugar if desired

  • Stir

  • Sip and enjoy!

  • Cold Brew Coffee!

  • Good morning!
